Francisco Barona Vinos D.O. Ribera del Duero

Francisco Barona. Vinos D.O. Ribera del Duero

It could be said that FRANCISCO BARONA was born under the vines. He has the vineyard streaming through his veins. His father is a vine grower, and so were his grandfather and great-grandfather. Due to his passion for the vineyards and the wine, he travelled to Bordeaux, where he graduated in Oenology and Viticulture, obtaining the well known certificates of BTS VO (French Higher National Diploma in Oenology and Viticulture) and DNO (French National Diploma of Oenology).

After working in some highly regarded international wineries (France, the USA and South Africa), in 2009, he came back as a well experienced winemaker to the Ribera del Duero, a region where he was born and had grown up in amongst the vineyards.

In 2010, with a certainty that he lived in one of the best vine-producing regions in the world, and aged only 25, he started to develop an idea that had been in his mind for a long time –to recover hundred-year-old vineyards from the Ribera del Duero region and make unique, authentic and different wines.

“THE BEGINNING”

Using his first savings and without thinking twice about it, in 2011 he bought five plots of old vines, in three different villages; five GRAND CRUS which amazed him every year with their high quality. They were small vineyards of low production, whose grapes were sold to the prestigious winery Vega Sicilia.

In 2014, he made his first red wine, extremely personal and bearing his own name FRANCISCO BARONA.

are the keys to his wine

VITICULTURE

Francisco Barona now owns 26 hectares of old vines. He has 28 GRAND CRUS planted between 1908 and 1948. The main variety of the vines is Tinto Fino, but there are also Grenache, Valenciana, Monastrel, Albillo and Jaen grapes.

The vineyard is treated with a lot of responsibility, trade and passion. The working method is always organic with respect to cosmic rhythms. Neither herbicides nor pesticides are used; the presence of sulphurs and coppers is extremely limited.

The vineyard employs its own natural protection systems to fight against illnesses. But it is helped, when needed, with natural mixtures of plants such as valerian, garlic, wormwood, camomile, lavender, sage, horse’s tail, nettle or cinnamon.

The soil is maintained with a ground cover and without being ploughed during autumn, winter and spring, which allows fertility for a longer period of time and improves the nutrition of the plant.

In summer, soil is ploughed to avoid losing humidity. Vines are treated leaving as much vegetation as possible. Neither shoot thinning nor trimming are carried out, which allows bunches to ripen in the shade, allowing them to obtain a higher acidity and a better balance in the wines.

In August, when veraison takes place, bunches are selected and the unripened bunches are removed from the vine.

OENOLOGY

Francisco Barona’s wines are created in the vineyard. Therefore, the winemaking process is handcrafted, natural and very little intervention.

The harvest is conducted using 12kg baskets and variety selection. The reception in the vats is done through gravity.

Alcoholic fermentation starts naturally with grapes’ own yeasts. Neither acidity regulators nor other oenological products are used. During the time spent in vats, wines are only slightly treated, manually and once a day.

The malolactic fermentation is always carried out in new French oak barrels. The wine is oak aged in new French oak barrels for 15 to 20 months, depending on the vintage.

Wines are always bottled in spring without fining or filtering.
